Hurricane Lowell skirted Kauaʻi, bringing destructive Category 2-equivalent winds, severe rainfall, and massive storm surge that left widespread damage across the island. Hardest hit was the South Shore around Poʻipū, where giant waves buckled roads, swept beachfront structures off their foundations, and flooded oceanfront resorts. The storm knocked out power to over 90% of the island, ripped away sections of the Waimea Pier, damaged the Port Allen harbor, and caused a 20,000-gallon wastewater spill. With dozens of homes destroyed or heavily damaged and one storm surge-related fatality confirmed on the island, local officials were left dealing with the worst hurricane impacts Kauaʻi had seen since Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
