As autumn sets in this year, neighborhoods come alive with vibrant displays of orange string lights, towering inflatable monsters, and glowing jack-o’-lanterns dotting porches and lawns. While today’s elaborate decor reflects modern festive fun and community spirit, these lighting traditions trace back over two millennia to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Marking the transition into the dark, cold winter, Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead blurred on October 31st. They lit massive bonfires and carried embers in hollowed-out turnips or gourds—the ancestors of today’s pumpkin jack-o’-lanterns—to ward off roaming spirits, guide lost souls, and protect their households from ill fortune.
